On Tuesday, I shot a photo session with my friend Melanie in the Arts District neighborhood of Los Angeles. I met Melanie at a screening of the documentary Off the Menu: Asian America where she asked a long not-quite-yet-put-together but thoughtful question about why Asian foods have to cater to other tastes to succeed. I knew at that moment we had to become friends.
What I quickly came to find out is that Melanie also had a background as a performer, and is now a badass producer extraordinaire.
Her personality is such a mix of that passionate drive and radiant charm, and they both show so brilliantly in her photos!
Something I love about shoot Melanie's photos is how wonderfully expressive she is. There's a wide range of things going on with each moment hinted at in her eyes and smile.
We had a lot of fun exploring the Arts District. She brought some outfits in a a bag bigger than she was, so we made the most out of the swaths of industrial backgrounds and her endless wardrobe.
Shooting with Melanie was a total blast. Her charm and vivacity know no bounds, and she was gracious enough to humor all my mid-session jokes. I can't wait for our next session!
